Ryker Kendon Borton

August 25, 2018 — April 16, 2026

Ryker Kendon Borton, 7, of Eau Claire, WI, died peacefully in the arms of his mother and brothers on April 16th, 2026.

Ryker was born on August 25th, 2018, in Eau Claire. It wasn't until he was eight months old when he was diagnosed with Vici syndrome-an extremely rare, terminal genetic condition. Due to his complex medical needs, Ryker was in and out of the hospital before his diagnosis and then countless times throughout his life. He underwent multiple procedures and required numerous daily medications and therapies. Ryker had a devoted complex-care team at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, along with a phenomenal pediatrician in Eau Claire. Although there isn't a cure for Vici syndrome, his team did everything they could to ensure he received the treatment and medical attention he needed.

When Ryker was feeling well, he enjoyed spending time outside in the fresh air. The sounds and bright sunshine would make him smile, and a cool burst of wind would make him laugh. He spent many evenings and weekends on the sidelines of the soccer pitch, cheering on his brothers. With a pom-pom and stuffed mascot in hand, he was their number-one fan. Ryker also loved when neighborhood friends came over to play. He happily shared snacks and loved being part of their games and laughter.

Ryker received a camper through Make-A-Wish, which allowed him to spend even more time outdoors at the campgrounds. Hanging out at the campsite, going for a ride through the park, splashing in the water, and snuggling up by the fire were some of his favorite things to do.

Music was one of Ryker's daily activities. He played many original pieces either on his iPad piano, strumming a small guitar or ukelele, or gently running his fingers along a set of chimes. If he wasn't creating the music, he would listen and move to an array of artists and movie soundtracks.

Vici syndrome can involve a wide range of secondary diagnoses; however, none of them defined who Ryker was. He was nonverbal, yet he communicated so well. He was nonmobile, yet he went everywhere. He was tube-fed, yet he was able to taste so many great flavors. He was visually impaired, yet he loved looking at books. He had very low muscle tone, yet he played with cool toys through adaptive switch buttons. Rolling dice and shuffling cards kept him involved and on a winning streak during game nights.

Through every procedure and medication side effect, he persevered. Ryker was an amazing little boy who endured more medical complexity in seven years than anyone should face in multiple lifetimes. He was sweet, patient, kind-souled, and deeply loving. His positive energy shined on everyone who spent time with him.

Ryker required 24/7 care, to which his mother, Amber, devoted herself. She navigated his journey alongside his medical team and made changes at home to accommodate his every need. Amber also started an annual bike ride to honor Ryker and raise awareness of Vici syndrome. "Ryde 4 Ryker" takes place in mid-August each year; this year, it will be held in his memory while also building a new foundation to carry on his legacy and help more children with complex medical needs. Ryker's journey will continue through Amber's advocacy and the support of others. He touched countless lives during his short time on earth, and he will continue to make a difference through every one of them.

Ryker's older brothers, Drake and Dawson, were his idols. Their love for him-and his for them-was incredibly inspiring. Ryker didn't care where he was or what was going on as long as his brothers were nearby. Their voices would make his eyes light up, and the tickles on his belly made him laugh. He would pull them in for hugs with such love, and the looks he gave them were pure admiration. Ryker was most at peace when wrapped in their arms. He is missed beyond words, but his love and positive energy continues to surround them.

Ryker is survived by his mother, Amber Borton; his brothers, Drake and Dawson Thill; and their sweet dogs, Halo and Skyla. He is also survived by his grandparents, Don and Lauri Borton; his aunt Rachel (Jay) Brogelman; and his cousins Kayla (CJ) Woletz, Chase Brogelman, and Vaughn Brogelman, along with many extended family members and close friends.

"Celebrate My Life"

Remember me with love and joy,

Let gratitude fill your heart.

Thankful for the time we had,

Gone...yet not apart.

If we measured life in moments,

Not in months or years,

I lived a hundred lifetimes,

Loved by all who hold me dear.

I hope you'll find your smile,

And generously speak my name.

Share stories and my heart,

Your love for life unchanged.

Celebrate the life I lived,

I will be watching from above.

I am always with you,

Sending you my light and love.
