Richard (Rich) Dean Carlson

August 5, 1954 - January 6, 2026

Richard "Rich" Dean Carlson, age 71, of Eau Claire, WI, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026. He was a man known for his gentle spirit, his quick wit, and his kind heart.

A Life of Service and Joy

Rich was born on August 5, 1954, near Chetek, Wisconsin, to Dean Waldemar and Aline (Lynn) Louise. He began his long career with the United States Postal Service in St. Paul, Minnesota, before moving to Eau Claire in 1984. He was a dedicated public servant who worked for the postal service for 40 years.

A Life of Passion and Play

Rich found joy in the spirit of competition and the connection of play. A devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers, his love for sports began in childhood while rooting for his favorite team, the Minnesota Twins.

Beyond being a dedicated sports fan, he was a man who loved games of all kinds, whether it was gathering around the table for board games, firing up a video game, or engaging in recreational sports. Yet, his greatest "play" was often found on the living room floor. Children and pets were naturally drawn to his gentle, peaceful demeanor, and he was always willing to get down on their level to engage in their world.

His sense of humor was a cornerstone of his personality-a perfect blend of wit and cheesiness that put you at ease while forging a deeper bond. Above all, he deeply valued his relationships. He looked beyond mere pleasantries to build genuine connections, making friends and family feel truly important and seen.

Even in the final eight years of his life, as he heroically battled Lewy Body Dementia, his true essence remained unshaken. He continued to be a living example of his core virtues: caring, helpful, loving, patient, funny, thoughtful, and ever-playful. He faced his journey with a grace that left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Family and Legacy

Rich shared nearly 22 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Kathy Carlson, whom he met online, and they married in a memorable, joyful wedding at the Mall of America on January 10, 2004. Together, they built a life centered on family and mutual support.
