James L. Wellner

July 18, 1940 — February 18, 2026

James L. Wellner, age 85 of Edson Township, Chippewa County, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at Bee Hive Homes of Eau Claire. He was born on July 18, 1940 to the late Joseph and Eleanor Wellner.

He grew up on the family farm in Edson Township and graduated from Stanley-Boyd High School. He bought his first motorcycle at the age of 16. After graduation he worked for Pete Celesnik as a milk hauler. Jim married Lois Cooley on May 20, 1960 at St. Joseph's Church in Boyd. That same year, Jim enlisted in the National Guard and was stationed in the state of Washington. Before he left for Washington, he bought Lois a 1961 Ford. Lois drove out to Washington to live with him.

After his honorable discharge, Jim worked as an attendant at Huberty Service Station in Stanley and painted barns on the side. From 1970 thru 1985, he worked at Madison Silo. It was here where he met his two best friends, Glen Bernier and Gene Hakes. Jim then worked for Edson Township maintaining the roads and, in the summer, he would help neighboring townships mow. He did this up to the age of 79.

Jim liked to snowmobile in the winter and travel with Lois in the summer going camping and antique farm shows.

Survivors include his sons: Gordon (Betty) and Robert (Michelle); grandchildren: Angie (Joe) Kopacz, Travis (Melissa) Wellner, Alex Swim (Olyvia - significant other) and Lexi Swim (Cole - significant other); great-grandchildren: Sebastian and Lewis Kopacz; special friend Judy Gindt; and many friends.

Preceding him in death are his wife Lois on Sept. 1, 2020, parents, brother Richard and sister Carol Shevlin.
