James Joseph Gall, 86, lifelong resident of Neillsville, Wisconsin, passed away on January 31, 2026 at Marshfield Medical Center where he had been a patient for several weeks. His loving family was at his side.
James "Jim" Joseph Gall was born to Edwin and Margaret (Weber) Gall on October 29, 1939. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and Neillsville High School before enlisting in the Army, where he finished his schooling. While serving his country, he was a member of the Signal Corps. He was assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Dix, New Jersey and Korea.
On September 1, 1962 Jim married Mary Ann McCarty and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Whether working hard or having fun, they were always together and lived life to the fullest. For many years, Jim was a mechanic at Zupanc's, Svetlik Motor Co., and Harry Kirsch Ford. Later he opened his own garage, Jim's Automotive. Jim adored his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved visiting and/or receiving videos from them. Jim and Mary Ann liked to travel and had fun adventures with their many friends from all over the country, whether it be on horseback, snowmobile, ATV or motorcycle, or getting together for coffee and cards after church.
In addition to his life partner/wife Mary Ann, Jim is survived by his children Scott Gall, Gina (John) Steiner, Lori Smagacz (Jim) Johnson, and Jim (Jean) Smagacz, grandchildren Kayla (Nick) Fitzgerald, Sidney Steiner, Eden Steiner, James (TJ) Johnson, Jason Johnson, Amanda Smagacz and Bryan Smagacz, great grandchildren Mia, Jada, Leela and Alaric, sister Jean (Joe) Wirkuty, brother Tom (Kathy) Gall, and many extended family members, as well as his beloved dog Abbie.
Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings Dorothy Gall in infancy, Marie (Joe) Vetrano, Elmer (Audrey) Gall, Viola (Lee) Marshall, Arthur (Dorothy) Gall, Louise (Harvey) Bauer, Theresa (Harold) Bennett, and Alice (Alvin) Wirkuty.
Jim's faith was very important to him. Services/Celebration of Life will be held on February 21, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Neillsville, Wisconsin. Father Greg Michaud will be officiating. Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will follow at the church following the service.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff on the 3rd floor MICU at Marshfield Medial Center for their compassionate care given to Jim.
Special thanks to Scott for all the work done taking care of the house and the horses, Ron Kleinschmidt for his care of the horses, Dr. Tim Shaw, Gina and John, Sidney and Eden, Jim and Jean, Lori and Jim for all their extra help and support, Carolyn Zschernitz and Penny Parkin, Mike and Sue Poziombke, and Bettie Finder for their care of Jim's dog Abbie.
