The sound of a saw cutting through fresh lumber, the smell of freshly cut wood, and the satisfaction of seeing a job take shape were among the simple things that made Greg feel most at home.
Gregory "Greg" Courter, 65, passed away peacefully at his farmhouse along the Chippewa River in Jim Falls, Wisconsin, on July 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, following a brief illness.
Born in Oshkosh and raised in Omro, Wisconsin, Greg was the son of Donald and Birdine "Toots" Courter. From an early age, he learned the value of family and hard work. He wasn't one to spend much time talking about what needed to be done; he simply got to work.
Over the years, Greg built a career that reflected those values. His work took him from local landscaping and residential construction to road construction and, later, the wind and solar energy industry, where he was a respected project manager.
He enjoyed tackling new challenges, solving problems, and building things that would last. But more than anything, he enjoyed the people. Greg never met a stranger for long. By the end of a conversation, you probably had a nickname, a story to laugh about, or plans to cross paths again.
Away from work, Greg found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved driving old trucks and tractors, baling hay, hunting, and cheering on the Packers. More often than not, hunting season ended with a buck or two. He was always ready for a road trip, whether it led to a favorite diner, a supper club, or somewhere new just to see what was around the next bend. Music almost always got him on the dance floor, and spending time with family during Picklefest was a tradition he never wanted to miss.
Greg was goofy, fun-loving, and forever a kid at heart. He enjoyed life's little indulgences, or any excuse to celebrate. Even on an ordinary Tuesday, if someone suggested dessert or another brandy Old Fashioned sweet, Greg would just grin and say, "Why not? I'm on vacation!".
Above all, Greg treasured his family. He shared nearly 40 years of marriage with Susan, and together they raised four children they dearly loved. Providing for his family was one of his greatest joys. He was proud of each of his children and delighted in watching his six grandchildren grow. His greatest hope was that they would stay close, look out for one another, and keep gathering to make memories together.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Susan; his children, Abigail Nelson (Levi), Emily Cuadra (Matthew), Ethan Courter (Allie), and Hannah Munson (Tyler); and his cherished grandchildren, Collette, Harland, Yan, Leo, Cal, and Rudy. He also leaves behind his sister, Connie Belter (Paul) and brother, Doug Courter (Dawn); Step-Mother Barbara Courter, and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many good friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Birdine Courter, and his beloved aunts and uncles: Dale Kertis, Donna Kertis, Gilbert (Rachel) Kertis, Laverne (Carol) Kertis, Virginia (Jerry) Hansen, Betty Keenlance, and Richard Kertis.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 am on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Anson Park, 12848 County Highway S, Anson, Wisconsin 54748. Please email the family at gcourter42@gmail.com for additional information.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers who provided Greg with exceptional care and comfort, allowing him to spend his final months at home with those he loved most.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Greg in a way that reflects who he was. The next time you find yourself at a local diner or restaurant, anonymously pay for the meal of a stranger or a young family. Memorial donations may also be made to St. Croix Hospice of Eau Claire.
"That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil-this is the gift of God."
