Dwayne Douglas Peterson

Dwayne Douglas Peterson, age 94, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and unwavering care for his family and community. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Eleanor, with whom he shared more than seven decades of marriage, friendship, laughter, and devotion.

Born on November 30, 1931, in Tacoma, Washington, to Walter Peterson and Margie Ann (Rowe) Peterson, Dwayne was raised with a strong work ethic and a passion for helping others. Throughout his life, he embraced every opportunity to serve, whether through his family, profession, public service, or simply lending a hand to someone in need.

Dwayne married his sweetheart, Eleanor Edith (Jenkins) Peterson, on September 22, 1951, in Tacoma, Washington. Together they built a remarkable life centered on love, education, community, and family. Their journey took them from Washington to Colorado, Utah, Indiana, and ultimately Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where they established deep roots and a welcoming home filled with laughter, conversation, and unconditional support.

A lifelong educator and advocate, Dwayne earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education from Pacific Lutheran University and later completed advanced degrees culminating in a doctorate in education. His career focused on improving opportunities for children and adults with disabilities, serving in teaching and leadership roles at universities throughout the country before retiring from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1994. His professional accomplishments reflected his belief that every person deserved respect, opportunity, and encouragement.

While Dwayne was deeply committed to his work, those who knew him best will remember the man behind the titles. He had an enduring love for baseball that began in his youth and remained with him throughout his life. As a young man, he played catcher, pitcher, and first baseman, proudly competing on local teams and especially enjoying his time on the mound. Whether watching a game, sharing stories from his playing days, or discussing the finer points of baseball strategy, the sport remained one of his greatest pleasures.

Dwayne was also known for his enjoyment of card games and friendly competition. He cherished time spent around the table with family and friends, where good conversation, laughter, and a deck of cards often created lasting memories. Those gatherings reflected what mattered most to him: being together.

Blessed with practical skills and endless curiosity, Dwayne loved fixing things. Family members quickly learned that if something was broken, Dwayne would likely have a tool, a solution, or at least an opinion on how to make it better. He found satisfaction in solving problems and took pride in helping others through both his knowledge and his actions.

Perhaps most importantly, Dwayne expressed his love through acts of service. He was the person who showed up, volunteered, repaired, transported, organized, encouraged, and quietly helped when help was needed. His life reflected a consistent commitment to caring for others - not for recognition, but because it was simply who he was. From public service including advocacy work and serving on the Eau Claire County Board, to everyday kindnesses extended to family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, he demonstrated that generosity is measured not only by grand gestures but by countless small acts performed with love.

Dwayne is survived by three of his children, Gail (Roger Brian), Diane (John Boyd), and Douglas (Debra Peterson): grandchildren, Heather, Peter and Rachel (Brian), Benjamin and Jacob (Peterson), Tracie (Chris McCray), Paul (Rebecca Boyd); and great grandchildren, Nolyn (Annie Rutherford), Grace and Sydney (Boyd); and a very special friend of the family, Corkie Blackwater. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Edith Peterson; his daughter, Cynthia Dee McGinnis; his parents; two brothers Arthur and Richard Peterson; and many family members and friends who were important parts of his long and meaningful life.

Dwayne will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, respected educator, loyal friend, baseball enthusiast, problem-solver, and servant-hearted man whose greatest gift was the care he gave to others. His family takes comfort in the countless lives he touched and in the enduring example of kindness, perseverance, and service that he leaves behind.

A celebration of Dwayne and Eleanor's lives will be held from 11 A.M. until 2 P.M. with a brief time of remembrance taking place at 12 P.M. on Saturday, August 29, at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, 535 S. Hillcrest Pkwy, Altoona.
