Donald "Don" Allen McCune, 83, of Eau Claire, formerly of Menomonie, Wisconsin, went to his eternal home in heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, April 3, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Don was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on November 15, 1942, the second son of Noel and Loretta (Watenphul) McCune of Osseo/Whitehall, Wisconsin, where the family farmed. Don loved being raised on a farm and often talked of learning to drive a team of plow horses by age five, caring for the cows and kittens, and his younger brother's German Shepherd named Tip.
Don joined the U.S. Navy in February 1962 and was stationed out of San Diego, California. Known as "Mac" by his shipmates, he served as an electrician aboard the USS Towers, a missile destroyer and one of the Navy's newest ships, during the Vietnam War. While stationed in San Diego, Don met Bonnie J. Malsam, and they were married on October 3, 1964. Don was honorably discharged on June 13, 1966.
Don and Bonnie moved to Eau Claire in the summer of 1966, where they raised five sons: Daniel (Pamela), Timothy (Tammie), Nathan, Benjamin (Tricia), and Aaron (April). Don became a union electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, doing mostly commercial electrical work in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, for over 30 years.
A man of deep faith, Don generously volunteered his time and materials to wire Zion Christian Fellowship, formerly known as "The Chapel," in Hallie, Wisconsin, where he was a founding member alongside Pastor Keith Gunn. He served as a volunteer with the chaplaincy program of the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry (Good News Global) of Western Wisconsin. Don regularly preached and taught Bible studies out of his home, wanting his family, friends, and neighbors to know about the love and salvation in Jesus Christ. Don was a man of prayer, faithfully praying for his family, friends, neighbors, and our country.
Don was remarried to Kathleen "Kathy" Stewart of Menomonie, Wisconsin, on December 20, 2000. They moved to Menomonie in 2001, where Don retired from active electrical work. Kathy preceded him in death in 2022.
A man of many hobbies, Don loved gardening, model trains, tractors, fishing, welding, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was a very proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Don is survived by his sons, Daniel (Pamela) McCune, Timothy (Tammie) McCune, Benjamin (Tricia) McCune, and Aaron (April) McCune; two step-sons, Ken (Lauri) Stewart and Mike (Jen) Stewart; nine grandchildren, Samantha McCune, Erika McCune, Hannah McCune, Mollie (Bryce) Dunio, Rebecca (Seth) Strawn, Madisen McCune, Gabe McCune, Simeon McCune, and Lily McCune; two step-grandchildren, Kyle (Megan) Stewart and Natalie Stewart; one great-granddaughter, Christine; sister-in-law, Marion McCune; along with many other relatives and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Noel and Loretta (Watenphul) McCune; his first wife, Bonnie; his second wife, Kathleen Stewart; his son, Nathan McCune; his grandson, Noah McCune; his brothers, Gene (Clara) McCune and Neil (Marion) McCune.
